2026 Declared the Age of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a band of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are not at all new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. But, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are serious titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To grasp this rise, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat apparent elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming seems especially powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and grappling abilities lend themselves to a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year so far.

When these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
