Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found multiple other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state initial examinations suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
A high-ranking political figure stated the attack made him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
