Debunking Venezuelan Celebration Videos and AI-Generated Pictures of Nicolás Maduro.

AI-generated images purporting to portray Venezuela's president under arrest following his capture by the American authorities have garnered tens of millions of views online.

How Fake Pictures of Maduro Surfaced Within Hours

Initial inauthentic synthetic picture seemingly showing him being escorted off a aircraft emerged a brief time later. The graphic was absent from any verified government accounts; it was instead published on X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

Verification involved the SynthID tool, confirming the image was produced or modified with AI tools.

Further synthetic images were disseminated in the ensuing period, purporting to present different views of the leader detained. Discernible logos on the graphics show they originated from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

AI analysis indicates all of these images were also created or altered generative models.

Real Photo Posted but Fabrications Continued

Donald Trump posted the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. However, despite the authentic image was published, synthetic images persisted online but were modified to include the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.

Digital forensics show the new fake images were initially shared on the video platform by a digital art account. Again, SynthID confirms the new graphics were produced with Google AI.

Main Takeaways:

  • Synthetic media circulated quickly following the events of the president's apprehension.
  • The first fake picture was shared on the same day on platform X.
  • Detection software like Google’s SynthID helped to confirm the pictures as inauthentic.
  • Fabrications persisted to circulate and evolve despite the publication of real images.
  • The origin of several fabricated images was traced to social media profiles focused on AI art.
