European Union Naval Forces Free Crew After Somalia Piracy Incident on Oil Tanker
European Union maritime units have safely freed two dozen crew members from a Maltese-flagged petroleum vessel that was attacked by pirates off the coast of Somali waters.
The Hellas Aphrodite, which was transporting petrol from Indian ports to South African destinations, was taken over on the recent incident when heavily armed attackers opened fire with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades before taking control of the vessel.
All sailors locked themselves inside a fortified citadel while the attackers assumed command of the marine transport.
Mission Accomplished
A Spanish warship, operating under the EU's anti-piracy mission, arrived at the ship on the following day. Elite military units boarded the craft and discovered all 24 crew members unharmed.
"The crew is secure and no injuries have been reported. During the ordeal, they remained in the citadel in direct contact with the operation," officials stated, adding that a "demonstration of power" had prompted the attackers to abandon the vessel before the naval unit reached the location.
Continuing Danger
Authorities added that the threat risk in the region "remains critical" as the armed groups are still in the area.
The mission utilized a aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicle and surveillance aircraft. Shortly before, another ship in the same area was approached by a fast boat but managed to evade it.
Resurgence of Piracy
This incident marks the latest in a spate of incidents that have created concern about a renewal of maritime crime in the region.
Such activity had decreased when global maritime security and protective protocols were implemented after reaching their highest point more than a decade ago.
However, assaults by Yemen's Houthi rebels on ships in the Red Sea, which have been carried out for the past two years, have led ships to be rerouted through East Africa's Indian Ocean - creating new possibilities for Somali gangs.
Statistical Overview
- Multiple piracy cases of piracy occurred off the coast of Somalia last year
- Several vessel takeovers were documented among these events
- Only one incident of piracy was reported in 2023
Industry professionals are closely watching the situation as vessel operators navigate these potentially hazardous shipping lanes.
