The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
